Manual harvest

The harvest generally begins in September. The vinegrower wonders this period if it must still wait, to accumulate the maximum of sugar in bays, or if it must gather the grapes quickly to avoid the gray rot.

With shears, the vintagers cut the grape and fill their bucket with wood. In the middle of the row, a hood containing 50 liters waits. It will be full with 7 or 8 buckets.

The vintager must hoist the hood on the back with a system of go up-hood, to bring it until the bottiches which will be transported by horses.

The cart with horse (“Leiterwäje” into Alsatian) contains 6 to 7 bottiches called “bittla” or “kachebittla”. Each one of these bottiches are filled by the carrier with hood, which empties it over its shoulder.
